The Challenge

For the University of Michigan’s Department of Earth & Environmental Science, their end of year newsletter is a key tool to get much-needed donations from alumni. They wanted to create an engaging and professional newsletter that would highlight their important work and persuade alumni to donate.

The Process

I wrote 9 articles for the newsletters about research, student programs, and new teaching methods. I interviewed professors and students to get the details and then condensed and polished them into one-page stories.

Our Solution

The alumni audience has a scientific background but not necessarily specialization in the topics I was writing about, so instead of translating the research completely into layman’s terms, I needed to write to an informed audience. Through interviews and follow up research, I made sure that I understood each topic thoroughly. Then I focused on making my stories as interesting as possible, to keep the alumni’s attention and persuade them to donate.
